On August 23, 2019 Rapsody dropped her third studio album Eve. This album was unique yet special because she titled each song on the album after an influential black woman, including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Aaliyah Eve also sampled artists like Phil Collins, Nina Simone, and Herbie Hancock. The folks over at HipHopDX, gave the album a perfect rating in their official review and claim that it is one of the best albums of 2019. The BET award winning online magazine even invited The Grammy Award-nominated artist to their headquarters for an interview in which she spoke about her path in the music industry, among many other things including a detailed explanation on why it is important for Hip Hop to have all flavors of women. In the interview, she spoke on her wait of J. Cole’s verse for the song Sojourner, as well as JAY-Z’s response to her email after joining Roc Nation. She also elaborated on how many singers/rappers use their style of rap to go against Jermaine Dupri’s so-called “stripper rap” or “strap” as he coined earlier in 2019.
According to HipHopDx, during their interview with the young American rapper, she states, “I always looked at it like it’d be dope to have balance and give everybody the same opportunity… I want Tierra Whack to have that same opportunity as everybody else. Leikeli47, as well as Megan The Stallion and Cardi B, because we need all flavors of women. Everybody don’t want to listen to me 24/7 because I don’t want to listen to me 24/7. I need a different vibe. I’m about to go to the club and turn up! I’m about to play ‘Bodak Yellow.'”
Rapsody moves on to speak about her Queen Latifah feature on the album and reveals that it is her favorite song because it offers five mantras that help her stay grounded. She says that there is no need for people to be chasing trends and even gave the example that the fans don’t see her trying to be like Nicki Minaj. Rapsody states that she does not want to be like anybody else and tells her fans that it is important to stay true to yourself.
It is easy to agree with the American rapper in all of her statements because she speaks her mind with authenticity. It makes complete sense that people won’t always want to listen to her or to one particular artists at all times. People want to change things up depending on how they’re feeling. Not only that, she speaks nothing but the truth on her statement that the Hip Hop community needs all different kinds of women in order to spice things up with many different flavors and offer Hip Hop fans all over the world numerous styles, beats, and sounds.
